MONDAY, June 30 (HealthDay News) -- More than 6 million children in the United States have a condition called nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD), which can boost their odds for heart disease, researchers report.

A fatty liver disease that is not well-known in overweight and obese children may be a precursor of cardiovascular disease, researchers reported in Circulation: Journal of the American Heart Association. Researchers performed a case-controlled study of 150 overweight children with biopsy-proven non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) and 150 overweight children without NAFLD.

Pediatric non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) raises cardiovascular risk in overweight and obese children. More than 6 million children in the United States have the fatty liver disease. NAFLD is most prevalent in children and adolescents of Hispanic and Asian ethnicity. Researchers suggest all obese children and those with symptoms of metabolic syndrome be screened for NAFLD.

Patients treated with antiretroviral therapy have a high prevalence of fatty liver disease, according to an Italian study published in the July 15 th edition of the Journal of Infectious Diseases . The overall prevalence of the condition amongst individuals in the study was 37%. None of these individuals had hepatitis B or C infection, drank excessively or were drug users.
